Make friends Longevity

NOT only socialization and simplify the job, someone who has good relations with friends work together to prolong life expectancy. A recent study has found a significant relationship between the two.

According to recent research conducted the American Psychological Association (APA), a person who has many friends work together, which always give support-will live longer than someone who does not have supporters.

Effect of peer support within the social environment against the risk of a person's death is most pronounced among those aged between 38 to 43 years. However, the researchers found similar support from the boss or the boss has less effect on the longevity of a person.

In addition, as quoted by the website Science Daily, a man who was having more control and authority in the workplace is also experiencing "protective effect". The conclusion of this study published in the May issue of the journal Health Psychology, published by APA. However, in contrast, control and decision-making authority may increase the risk of death among women in the sample.

"Social support in the workplace, which can represent how well study participants relate socially in the context of the workplace, is an important indicator of all-cause mortality risk," the researchers said in the conclusion of the study.

"A find (unexpectedly) is that the effect of additional control over the risk of death was positive for men, but negative for women," the researchers said.

The researchers rank high social support if the study participants reported that their colleagues are very helpful in solving problems and admitted that they were close friends.
Control and decision-making is highly valued if participants say can use their initiative and have the opportunity to determine how best to use their skills.

They are also free to make decisions about how to accomplish the task given to them and what to do in the job.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University looked at medical records from 820 adults who were followed for 20 years from 1988 to 2008. The workers came from people who have referred to HMO screening center in Israel for a routine examination. The people who are referred are suspected of having physical or mental health problems are excluded from the sample. The workers came from some of Israel's largest companies in finance, insurance, utilities, health care, and manufacturing. They work an average of 8.8 hours a day.

One third of them are women, 80 percent married and had children, and 45 percent of whom at least had a formal education for 12 years. The researchers controlled for those of physiological risk factors, behavioral and psychological of total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, alcohol consumption, smoking, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and past hospitalizations.

The researchers obtained data from the control variable periodic health examination participants, including physiological risk factor tests and questionnaires that were completed during the inspection by all participants. In addition, participants were given another questionnaire that measures job demands, control at work and friends work together, and support of superiors. During 20 years of follow-up, 53 participants were found dead.

When asked why the control of the workplace can be positive for men but not for women, the lead researcher, Arie Shirom PhD, says that for blue-collar or blue collar employees (blue-collar job) is generally the highest charge is a male, not female.

"To provide partial support to our findings, a recent study found that for female blue-collar workers, have a low level of control does not increase their risk of becoming ill with the stress associated with the disorder," he said.

One of the limitations of this study is that researchers do not memilikidata to changes in workload, control, or support during a period of 20 years.

"However, we argue that other researchers have consistently found that job characteristics of the workload, control, and support tend to be stable over time," said Shirom.
